AmeriCorps  Job Description

                                                                               

The AmeriCorps Refugee Employment Specialist is a part-time position, 25 hours per week/a minimum of 920 in 12 months, Arabic, Somali speakers preferred. This position is responsible for providing assistance to members of the refugee communities in need of employment or to upgrade their jobs through case management in order to reach self-sufficiency.  This position will also contribute to client assessments and employment plans as needed.  The Employment Program Supervisor will supervise this position. ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­

 

Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of employment assessments, employment plans, discussion of short and long term goals, the importance of self-sufficiency and English language training.
  • When applicable, provide client referrals to medical and health institutions, public assistance agencies, childcare assistance agencies, etc.
  • Maintain the case load of one particular refugee community in need of employment services.
  • Develop and locate appropriate employment opportunities for clients, attend local job fairs, respond to local employment advertisements.
  • Determine which refugee clients are appropriate for job openings, escort refugee to potential places of employment, and assist with their application process using an interpreter as needed.
  • Participate in all staff meetings and trainings and other duties as assigned.
  • Display cultural appreciation, compassion and understanding to the needs of clients, clients’ families, co-workers, visitors, volunteers and other persons collaborating with the Refugee & Immigrant Center.
  • Maintain confidentiality about clients, staff members and other collaborators.
  • Represent the Refugee & Immigrant Center in a professional manner including communication skills, dress, hygiene etc.

 

Requirements:

  • Physical Activities: The incumbent must be able to hear, see, drive, lift and carry up to 20 pounds and perform word processing.
  • Mental Process:  Knowledge of grammar, spelling, understanding of verbal and written instructions in English. Organizational and time management skills. Delivers services in a timely and effective manner. Must be able to work with minimal supervision. Demonstrates both problem-solving and problem prevention.
  • Other Skills and Requirements: Bilingual in Arabic and/or Somali and English preferred. Working knowledge of data-entry and competency in Word and Excel. Ability to perform, and work quickly and accurately, with attention to detail. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work within a team structure with other staff members. Provide excellent client services within a fast-paced and multicultural setting. Provide proof of valid Utah driver’s license, auto insurance and have clean driving record and pass a background check. Access to a personal vehicle is required.
  • Education/Experience: High School Diploma and/or B.A. /B.S. or previous work experience in social services or job development preferred.

 

The pay, “called a living stipend” is $7,800, that will be split up over 12 months & distributed twice a month on the 7th & 22nd until you are no longer in the program.
This is a Part -time contract/commitment for one year (12 months) with a minimum of 920 hours. Upon Successful completion of the contract, minimum hours, & satisfactory fulfillment of your one year contract you would be eligible for an Education award of $2,822. You may use to either further your education or pay on previously accrued Federal student loans.

Also while serving as an AmeriCorps member if you have any Federal Student loans, they will qualify for forbearance & any taxes accrued will be paid by the National Corporation (Trust) at the end of your 12 month contract.
Position to start 10/01/2014 & Contract term ends 9/30/15.

This is a one year contract/commitment. Meaning once you sign the contract it is binding. Please be sure that you can commit to the full year if applying.

Office Hours:  8:30 to 5:30, Monday-Friday
