The Director/Chair of the Social Work Department will administer the BSW degree program. S/he will be responsible for the implementation and fulfillment of department specific duties, departmental plans, mission, policies for continuous improvement and institutional effectiveness. The Director/Chair of the Social Work Department is under the direct supervision of the Vice President for Instruction.




  1. Conduct progression to the major for students
  2. Administer key advising for the BSW program
    1. Distribute information on advising/student resources/system changes to faculty
    2. Meet with potential students to acquaint them with requirements of the BSW program
    3. Administer and support advising for BSW students, including plans of study and advising/registration activities and faculty assignments
  3. Coordinate activities/orientation for students entering the advanced major and for students entering the field practicum
  4. Administer and review with faculty the application process for admission into the advanced major
  5. Develop and maintain department policies and procedures
  6. Develop/revise printed and electronic publications of the BSW program

  7. Support and mentor the BSW faculty in teaching and advising, including course development, syllabi, teaching techniques, etc.
  8. Provide oversight of a BSW curriculum that is in compliance with CSWE accreditation standards
  9. Oversee the field practicum program
  10. Work with CSWE to maintain accreditation of the BSW program
  11. Participate with the BSW Program Directors organization, as appropriate
  12. Keep current on social work education and provide information to social work faculty on same
  13. Coordinate the evaluation and assessment of curricular and non-curricular activities
  14. Supervise and maintain scheduled for department faculty and ensure faculty fulfill their roles and responsibilities
  15. Collaborate with department faculty to ensure assessment plans and activities are carried out specific to student, faculty, and program performance as needed for continuous improvement and institutional effectiveness
  16. Coordinate the planning and scheduling of BSW courses
  17. Continuously improve and implement student advisement, orientation, recruitment, retention, and support opportunities and activities for BSW students
  18. Lead department/faculty meetings
  19. Evaluate faculty performance per OLC policy and procedures, including teaching, scholarship, and service
  20. Act as principal investigator for grants, where appropriate, to ensure compliance with program goals and budgets
  21. Serve on OLC committees
  22. Ensure department/assessment/institutional reports are completed in timely manner
  23. Manage budgets for department and grants (as applicable) for compliance with funding regulations
  24. Perform department-specific duties
  25. Other duties as assigned




  1. MSW plus two years post-MSW social work experience required; doctorate in Social Work or related field required
  2. Demonstrated research competence required
  3. Experience as a faculty member in higher education preferred
  4. Successful academic or other administrative experience required
  5. Community development experience desirable
  6. Knowledge and experience of CSWE accreditation process and requirements preferred
  7. Knowledge of Lakota history, culture, and language
